With three films already scheduled for release this year, Caleb Landry Jones is a name that has been echoing around Hollywood for all the right reasons. Pausing between shooting the alluring vamp thriller “Byzantium” and auditioning for his next big part, 1883 meets one of the most talked faces of 2012 so far.

Intermittently cryptic yet remarkably honest and with a childlike enthusiasm that wanes, at times, with a cynicism that implies he is wiser than his years; what burns through the most - in between short bursts of Ella Fitzgerald choruses and colorful stabs at an English accent - is the young actor’s sheer grit and dedication.
“I was 19 when I decided that I was supposed to act. I didn’t decide though, I wouldn’t say ‘decide’ anyway, I feel like it was something that I was just supposed to do, failing wasn’t an option.”
His commitment so far has seen the X-Men star transition from one part to another, with often only a week’s respite. In his latest show of versatility Caleb turns from shady, celebrity-obsessed virus salesman in Brandon Cronenberd’s Antiviral, to a vulnerable 17 year-old boy who falls in love with a 200 year-old vampire, in vamp-thriller Byzantium.
With filming completed this January, he promises great things: “I utterly hate everything that the vampire craze has become. Byzantium is different; it will be a film and not a popcorn movie like the rest of them!”
It is this rejection of the mainstream that resonates most notably as he channels his intense energy into thumbing through our clothes, searching for a look that captures “him” and doesn’t turn him into “one of those billboard guys,” who he insists end up all looking the same.
He credits this ability to stay true to himself for guiding him through typical American high school: “I didn’t really get on with anyone at school; they all wore Wranglers and cowboys boots and chewed tobacco”, he laughs. “If anyone tried to start a fight with me, I didn’t fight back, I’d just do the whole creepy guy thing”, he lowers his head and shoots us a menacing stare, “I think it ended up being more effective.”
It was, however, in high school theatre that Caleb was scouted for his first part in No Country For Old Men, which inspired the actor to move to LA on a shoestring to pursue a career in film.
“High school theatre allowed me to try out a number of things, however theatre acting and film acting are very different and once I realised how much more intimate I could be with a film my passion grew for that. It was this, combined with watching Malcolm McDowell, Dusting Hoffman and Jack Nicholson films over and over again, that gave me the confidence to go out to LA and actually do it.”
Once in LA Caleb crashed with Foster the People frontman, Mark Foster, as he began to find his feet in the sunshine state: “I spent six months working my ass off and going out for basically everything, trying to get something. I got my part in X-Men just as Foster got signed. Just a few months later I was in London promoting X-Men and they were here on their first UK tour, we were both like, ‘woah! We’re here together, we’ve made it!’”
A musician himself, Caleb has been writing his own music for the last five years and is waiting for the right time to release it. For now, however, his feet are firmly in front of the camera. Leaving the rising star with a well-handled sсript in his hand, as he journeyed beck to hotel to work on his next audition, Caleb concludes: “Essentially I just follow my heart and whatever that leads to, I’ll do that. As long as this time next year I’m still working non-stop, I’ll be happy!”
